This fall, the NASA Wallops Visitor Center is offering educational programs for kids and adults alike almost every Saturday September through November. From STEM labs to model rocket launching to an astronaut-oriented puppet show, there’s a little something for everyone this season on Wallops Island. 

Scout troops, home school and youth groups are encouraged to partake in the programs; groups of eight people or more should call ahead in advance. A PDF of the fall public program schedule can be downloaded here

Saturday, September 29

11 a.m. – STEM Lab: Pop Rockets

Dive into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) with a hands-on activity. Join us each week to explore a different topic. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 6 & up. 

Build and launch an Alka-Seltzer rocket and discover how Newton’s Third Law applies to rockets. 

2 p.m. – Rocketry: Water Bottle Rockets

Learn about the Sounding Rocket Program at the Wallops Flight Facility. Take turns to fill and launch water bottle rockets. Approximately 20 to 60 minutes. Geared toward ages 6 to adult.

Saturday, October 6

11 a.m. – Investigation Station: Solar

During this program we will investigate a STEM related topic through labs, demonstrations and activities. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 6 and up. 

2 p.m. – Space Station Saturday: Space Unites the World

Do you know who is on the International Space Station right now? Did you know they are working on amazing experiments 250 miles above your head? During this program we will explore what is happening onboard the ISS and how the astronauts are handling life in space. Approximately 30 minutes. All Ages. 

Saturday, October 13

11 a.m. – Story Time: Space

Listen to a story and make a craft that will explore different science themes. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 3 to 6.

2 p.m. – Tour of the Solar System

During this presentation, we will take a tour through our solar system with stops at the sun, the planets, dwarf planets, and moons. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 8 & up.

Saturday, October 20

11 a.m. – STEM Lab: Stomp Rockets

Dive into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) with a hands-on activity. Join us each week to explore a different topic. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 6 & up. 

Engineer a rocket mission.  Team up to aim and successfully launch your rocket at a target.  

2 p.m. – Peculiar Planet: Mars

Have you ever wondered about other planets when looking up at the night sky? Join us for a short program to learn about Mars. Approximately 15 minutes.

11 a.m. – Story Time: Astronauts

Listen to a story and make a craft that will explore different science themes. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 3 to 6.

2 p.m. – Rocketry: Model Rocket Launch

Learn about the Sounding Rocket Program at the Wallops Flight Facility. A short discussion will be followed by Model Rocket Launching. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 6 & up.

11 a.m. – Puppet Show 

Join Sam the Monkey and Puppet Astronauts Jenny and Jeff as they go on an adventure in space. Approximately 30 minutes. Ages 2 – 5. 

2 p.m. – Peculiar Planet

Have you ever wondered about other planets when looking up at the night sky? Join us for a short program to learn about one of the other planets in our solar system. Approximately 15 minutes.

Saturday, November 17

11 a.m. – Investigation Station: Weather

During this program we will investigate a STEM related topic through labs, demonstrations and activities. Approximately 30 minutes. Geared toward ages 6 and up. 

2 p.m. – Animals in Space
